The gaps between the GC favourites after the Tour de France team time trial

Jonas Vingegaard struck the first blow of the 2026 Tour de France, leading Visma | Lease a Bike to victory in the opening team time trial in Barcelona and taking the first yellow jersey of the race. The Danish rider finished off a perfectly executed performance on the final climb to Montjuïc, where Visma’s decision to save Vingegaard, Davide Piganzoli and Sepp Kuss for the hilly finale paid off in style.

Tadej Pogačar and UAE Team Emirates-XRG came closest to denying Vingegaard, but the Slovenian ultimately had to settle for third on the stage, 11 seconds behind Visma on the day and 12 seconds down on Vingegaard in the general classification.

Juan Ayuso also limited his losses well with Lidl-Trek, while Remco Evenepoel produced a strong finale for Red Bull, gaining early ground on teammate Florian Lipowitz.

The gaps remain small after just one stage, but the opening team time trial has already given this Tour its first GC picture. Vingegaard starts in the strongest position, while Pogačar, Ayuso and Evenepoel are all within striking distance.

Others, including Paul Seixas, Tom Pidcock, Kevin Vauquelin and Cian Uijtdebroeks, already have time to make up.
