Cristian Camilo Muñoz was involved in an accident at the French one-day race, the Tour du Jura, on April 18 while racing for the NU Colombia team and was initially treated at a medical centre in France.

The Colombian rider then travelled to Spain, where he was scheduled to race the Vuelta a Asturias. However, the 30-year-old suffered medical complications following the accident and died on the morning of April 24.

“With profound sorrow and dismay, the Colombian Cycling Federation and its Executive Committee mourn the passing of the talented Boyacá native, Cristian Camilo Muñoz Lancheros, a cyclist with the Nu Colombia team,” read an official statement from the Colombian Cycling Federation.

Muñoz joined the Nu Colombia team in 2024 after spending two seasons at fellow Colombian squad EPM. Beforehand, the Colombian rider spent three years racing in the WorldTour at UAE Team Emirates alongside riders including Tadej Pogačar from 2019 until 2021.

The NU Colombia squad racing at the Vuelta a Asturias in Spain withdrew from the event ahead of the second stage following the news, and a minute's silence is to be held at the finish of the stage in honour of Muñoz.

“His departure leaves an immense void in Colombian cycling and in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him and sharing the road and competition with him,” said the Colombian Cycling Federation. “Cristian will be remembered for his dedication, discipline, and character both on and off the bike."
